My work is influenced by Magic Realism and explores the fragmentary, veiled and sometimes edited nature of memory.  I create drawings and paintings of the places I've travelled and lived. Exploring the idea of belonging and exile, my intention is to capture specific, personal experiences and spaces, from my childhood spent on the Welsh West coast and more recent experiences and encounters as a sailor and as an itinerant. I am fascinated by the way the spatial sense of memory contracts and expands under duress or in moments of great ecstasy and freedom.

The multi disciplined journeying between different mediums helps me construct an image, so  I try to keep my approach reflexive: recognising and projecting my own lived experience of the Uncanny upon figures in paintings, literature and film, constructing models and theatre sets that help me inhabit and draw from different perspectives, and also by drawing directly from life.  I find that a tangible sense of narrative and space begins to unfold during this haptic process.

Prior to doing my Postgraduate Diploma, I worked as an illustrator for twelve years, hand-drawing/painting commissions for a wide range of publishers and companies (including Penguin, Algonquin Books, The Folio Society). These commissions reflected my interest in reportage drawing and were primarily for travel writers. I worked for two years at the Welsh Books Council as a bilingual book designer. During the past ten years I have also partnered in the diy restoration and passage making of an ocean sailing boat in the waters of the USA, Mexico and Cuba. I am currently based in Kampala and am primarily focussing on my work as an artist/painter.
